Forever Is A Really Long Time takes a look into the world of a practicing OB/GYN and her attempt to better educate all of her single patients, in particular the young women, about the real life, negative, long term consequences of having a sexual relationship or encounter. Dr. Thompson sees these girls and women in her practice daily and is on a mission to reduce preventable diseases and unplanned pregnancies. Dr. Thompson, is often frusrated by the lack of knowledge her patients have on how risky sex can be. She is happiest when patients come to see her before they have sex for the first time so she has a chance to educate them. Dr. Thompson asks her patients that have struggled with diseases, unplanned pregnancy, and emotional tumult to write in her waiting room journal their own personal stories and strugles in an attempt to reach more young women. The stories will hopefully open the eyes of more of her patients so they understand the risks they are taking with their health. Dr. Thompson, like all good physicians, is not preaching or lecturing her young patients. Her goal is to inform them of all the facts and the often grim reality they may face. Her goal is to make sure more women know what can happen, what does happen, to women every day and let her patients make an informed choice of whether they are ready to have sex or not. The book follows thirteen people on their journey of pain, suffering, and long term consequences as a result of sex outside of a long term, committed relationship. Unfortunately, most of the people who write their personal story for Dr. Thompson's book were unaware of how risky their behavior was. Dr. Thompson's ulitmate goal is to make her patients stop, or at least pause, before entering a sexual relationship particularly at a young age. She believes that by giving people a glimpse of her daily life, she can ultimately reduce the number of sexual partners her patients have which would result in fewer diseases and unplanned pregnancies. Dr. Thompson believes in adults making informed decisions and is doing what she can do inform women and girls by telling real life stories so they can make a more informed decisions. The book contains different stories from different characters with different diseases mixed in with facts and statistics that all sexually active adults need to know.
